biology-blog:

This isn’t a hummingbird— it’s actually a moth, known as a hummingbird hawk-moth! Much like hummingbirds, it feeds on flowers and emits an audible humming noise as it flies. They have been shown to be able to recognize colors (they probably evolved this ability to make feeding on flowers easier), and can hover in place. Their resemblance to hummingbirds is an example of convergent evolution, which is when two (or more) species with different ancestors evolve to have similar traits.
